Abstract: Much research has been conducted on how adverse childhood experiences can shape adult mental health. There have been proven connections between unsafe home environments and social-emotional development causing issues later on. Not as much research has been done, however, on less extreme childhood situations and their subtler consequences. I wanted to utilize the longitudinal nature of the Add Health study to see if a connection could be drawn between how adolescents described their relationship with their parents initially, and how they characterized their relationships with others 24 years later.
